PRAISE FOR BLACK PIG FARM
"This is a first, a ten track album on a single slab of seven inch vinyl. Influences are Dr Seuss and The Beatles (bearded days), plus it was recorded at Abbey Road. The result sounds like a musical score for a Tim Burton animation.
The melancholic strings of 'Early Bird' lead us into the dark and humorous world of 'Black Pig Farm'. 'Mr Herb Picker' is a twisted jolly up and 'Carousel' is self-explanatory, all three come together with a drum machine disco beat. The music hall sing-a-long of 'I want to live on Black Pig Farm' closes Side A, and is done in a 'I want to marry a Lighthouse Keeper (Clockwork Orange) style. Flip it over and you get the cute 'Daisy Burger', complete with a cow mooing and sharpening knife's. 'The End' spawns what could be Julie Andrews and The Lysergics. 'The Yard went on Forever' is reminiscent of a majestic TV theme and finally, 'Insane in the Pigbrane' is cheap electronics and sweeping strings.
There's also a story in rhyme, and this alone makes it worth buying.
"The morning sparrows chirp, some analogue keys bleep, the hip hop beats weave around, and... it’s the end of the song, after precisely one minute and eighteen seconds. That was ‘Early Bird’, the opener of the world’s first seven inch concept album. The brainchild of Funky Monkey (Mark Bown and Gerard Johnson), ‘Tales from Black Pig Farm’ is at times a darkly humorous (listen out for a cow mooing, immediately followed by the sound of sharpening knifes in ‘Daisy Burger’) take on country life through a soundtrack of electronic instrumentation, well placed samples and catchy melodies. The choice cut is 'The End', the closest to a conventional song, with fully realised female vocals and an acoustic denouement.
Weighing in at just over eleven minutes, this hard to find vinyl is the I-D seven inch concept album of the year.”
"Funky Monkey release the world's first seven inch concept album. How? You may ask. Construct an Orwellian narrative with League of Gentleman undertones (check the 'script' on the inner sleeve), chop, compress and adapt musically historical moments from Jimmy Webb to Kraftwerk with cleavers and carousels and – voila! The concept album to end all psychedelic fairy tales is upon you. Be afraid. Be very afraid."
"The 'concept album' may strike fear into the heart of the most resilient audiophile, but London duo Funky Monkey are here to redeem it once and for all.
This month they release the world's first seven inch concept album. inspired by a '50s Russian tale about a scientist placing his dying wife's brain in his dog, 'Tales from Black Pig Farm' is a twisted tale of kindly farmers, jealous wives and a bus driver reincarnated as a cow.
The wonderful thing, of course, is that all the songs were so ruthlessly filleted. 'The editing process was brutal', explains Mark Bown, who along with Gerard Johnson crafted this example of the Magnetic Fields meets Trumpton. If you like your songs lean, the farm' is the place to be."
